In the hustle and bustle of this busy world, many often forget to enjoy the outdoors, so I wonder what life would be like without electricity. Would life be simpler or would the world have evolved to the same pace it runs at today without it?
Some cabins today do not have electricity. Some simply have running water and that is it, some don’t even have that much. If I were to have a small one-room traditional wood cabin, without electricity my indoor space would be inviting, but small and cozy. I imagine a wood stove in the corner of a small wood cabin gently crackling as it keeps the space warm. A small log basket would stand alongside it filled with logs to feed the flames in the stove. In the other corner, a Brazilian hammock would be hung on the walls for sleeping peacefully. Sure, a bed would work too but hammocks are more compact and they can be hung so they don’t take up valuable floor space.
I can even imagine long walks outdoors, maybe along a beach to find the perfect spot for delicious picnics filled with vegetables and fruits I grew myself and homemade bread placed in dishes along the center of a vibrant outdoor blanket.
Outdoors, I imagine a hammock in the distance, facing west, tied with tree straps between trees. In that hammock, I could read my favorite novels during the day and watch the sun go down every night.
Nightfall would never be a problem because solar lanterns, path lights and string lights would light up the outdoor space while the wood stove or candles would take care of the indoor space. I can imagine evenings around the fire pit cooking pudgy pies, marshmallows for S’mores, as well as other food on the fire pit grill.
Once time for bed, I would go into my little cabin and crawl in the hammock, laying diagonally for a comfortable sleep. I would not have to worry about lights from computers, digital clocks or appliances waking me as without electricity, these are non-issues, so I would likely awaken the next morning fully rested and ready for a new day.
